Iraq to build and launch a $600 million strategic satellite into space

Iraq-FlagGelgamesh 1 will be the name of a new satellite built by the Ministry of Communication in Iraq and the world’s leading communication companies (including the french aerospace company Astrium ).

14 space and communication companies provided proposals for a strategic multipurpose satellite to be launched into the earth’s orbit according to the Ministry of Communication. This comes after the Iraqi Ministry of Communication announced that it had reclaimed its outer space territory according to international laws.

A 6 ton satellite is planned and $600 million is budgeted for this project.

007A 12 year old Zain Al-Abedeen Thejeel from Nasiriya (225 miles south of Baghdad) became suspicious of a car with “strange wires” which a stranger insisted to park near Zain’s home. He sneaked under the car pulled the number plates and reported the suspicious car to the authorities. Upon inspection by police explosive experts, the car  did turn out to be packed full of explosives ready to be detonated and they managed to defuse it.

Zain Thaejeel’s bravery and miraculous unusual action was recognised by the Nasiriya Police Commander (on 17th September 2013) and the Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki (on 21st September 2013).

Another security breach and a failure on behalf of the authorities but with a HAPPY ending this time…

New Iraq Oilfield producing 35,000 barrels of Oil daily in Nasiriya

The Gharraf [Garraf] oil field in Thi Qar [Dhi Qar] province, 85km north of the City of Nasiriyah, started producing oil on a large scale.

Iraq’s Ministry of Oil said the flow rate was 35,000 barrels a day, and peak production of 230,000 bpd was expected in 2017. Oil production started on Saturday 31st August 2013

Japan Petroleum Exploration (JAPEX), in partnership with Malaysian national oil company PETRONAS and the Iraqi state-owned North Oil Company (NOC), secured the winning bid for the field in December 2009 under Iraq’s Second Petroleum Licensing Round.

The Thi Qar Governor, Yahya Mohamed Baqir Al-Naseri in a visit to the  newly constructed Oil field announced that an extra 11 oil wells will be drilled very soon to complete the first stage.

Wheat & veg production soars by 75,000 tons in Diyala, Iraq

iq-agricThe Diyala Agriculture Authority in Iraq has announced that this year there has been a substantial increase in crop and vegetable production.

Wheat and Oat produced in year 2013 increased by 75,711 tons compared to last year. Other fruit and vegetables including Dates prodution has also improved visibly according to the report by Diyala Agriculture Authority.

The report attributed these increases to:

  1. Modern Irrigation techniques
  2. Increased Awareness through planned and targeted programs for farmers
  3. Increased research projects.
  4. Increased automation, including Automatic seeding and sowing of tomatoes and other veg.
  5. Micro-financing smaller agricultural projects with 0% interest loans.

The Iraqi government announced an initiative in August 2008 to improve agriculture nationwide with an objective to reach self-sufficiency of the strategic crops by 2018.
